Habitat

They prefer open woodlands, mostly deciduous, near streams. Also can be seen in parks or orchards. They nest in dead trees or dead parts of live trees and line the nest with wood chips. Nesting trees usually deciduous having fungus which softens the wood, making it easier to create nesting holes.

Ecology

They mostly eat insects, like beetle larvae, ants, and caterpillars, which live inside the wood or tree bark. They also eat corn earworms, tent caterpillars, bark beetles, and apple borers. Berries, grains, acorns, and other plant material make up a quarter of their diet. They also can eat out of feeders.
